Student Support

Inclusion (Wave 1)

Inclusive education at Colonel Light Gardens means that all students benefit academically and socially from high-quality teaching. Students are supported to access and participate in learning alongside their peers, with reasonable adjustments and strategies tailored to their individual needs. Inclusion is embedded in our school culture, policies, and everyday practices.

Our teachers utilise quality differentiated teaching practices (QDTP), proactively planning varied approaches to what students learn, how they learn it, and how they demonstrate their learning, ensuring each student achieves their potential efficiently.

Intervention

At Colonel Light Gardens Primary School, we are committed to inclusivity, ensuring that every child is supported in their learning journey. Our teachers employ QDTP to cater to the diverse needs of all students. Some students may benefit from additional small group interventions, while a few may require intensive, targeted, and highly personalised individual support. Eligibility for individual support is determined by the Department for Education's Inclusive Education Support Program (IESP) criteria.

Support (Wave 2)

Our intervention programs are structured through waves, specifically focusing on Wave 2, which include:

Small Group Intervention (Some): Targeted support through programs such as early intervention phonics, LGU, Bond Blocks for Years 1-2, PVAT 3-6, What’s the Buzz, Foodary, Gifted and Talented, fine motor skills aimed at developing specific literacy, numeracy, and social skills.

Enrichment (Wave 2)

At times, identified groups of students across the school may be extended in co-curricular activities to enrich their learning experiences. There are many extra-curricular opportunities for all students to pursue their areas of expertise and passions.

Inclusive Education Support Program (IESP) (Wave 3)

The Department for Education’s IESP is a functional needs-based funding model for students with disabilities. Funding is allocated based on documented adjustments in personalised plans, rather than a student's disability, diagnosis, or label.

One Plans

Students may qualify for a One Plan if they are identified through the Inclusive Education Support Program, are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, are a Child in Care, or have significant learning difficulties. The One Plan is an online personalised learning plan developed in partnership with families, the child, school staff, and relevant personnel. It is a working document, reviewed and updated throughout the year to support the child's inclusion and achievement.

EALD

Australia is a culturally diverse nation, and the success of Australian multiculturalism is rooted in inclusiveness. The South Australian Education Department offers an English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EALD) program to support students whose language proficiency may not yet meet the requirements for success at their year level.

The EALD program provides intensive English language sessions for students with a language background other than English. It aims to enhance student participation across all areas of the curriculum while building their knowledge, skills, and understanding of the world.

At Colonel Light Gardens Primary School, our EALD teacher works flexibly and collaboratively within the school to optimise student learning and wellbeing. Support is provided through small group sessions. This approach enhances students' participation, confidence, and English language skills, leading to improved outcomes for their future.
