Performing Arts
Our Performing Arts program, led by a specialist teacher, offers students the opportunity to explore music, dance, and drama in a dynamic and supportive environment. Through these disciplines, students develop creativity, confidence, self-awareness, and empathy. Our spacious room in Grange Hall is equipped with a piano, ukuleles, and a wide range of melodic and non-melodic percussion instruments, allowing for engaging group activities and performances.
Extra-Curricular Groups
Our school proudly offers a variety of music groups to nurture young talent and foster a love for music. CLG Koe (Ko-eh), comprising Year 4-6 singers, and Melody Makers, featuring Year 2-3 singers, provide vocal students with opportunities to develop their skills and perform. Additionally, CLG Sound, our Year 4-6 instrumental group, allows students to explore and perform with a diverse range of instruments. Our school offers vibrant dance programs with 'Year 3-4 Dance' and 'CLG Dance' for Year 5-6 students, led by our dedicated teachers, providing opportunities for creative expression and skill development.
Performances
Every two years, the students at CLG present an evening at the Adelaide Town Hall... 'Spotlight on CLG'. Students from Year 3-6 present a fantastic 90-minute concert of singing, acting and dance. It is an opportunity for all classes and extra-curricular groups to showcase their talent.
In alternate years, students in Reception, Year 1 and 2, present a spectacular performance at our 'Special Persons Day'. Their wonderful singing, dancing and acting always delights their invited special guests.
We are a Festival of Music school
Colonel Light Gardens Primary School participates in the Festival of Music each year. Students from our school have been involved in many ways. Along with our year 5-6 Festival Choir performing in the Festival of Music concert series, we have also had many students in the orchestra, in the performance troupe, as hosts and shining as soloists. Our flagship Festival Choir has had many extra opportunities to show off their hard work and excellence, such as performing at the 'Andy Thomas Space Forum' at the Adelaide Convention Centre and for 891 ABC Adelaide at the Royal Adelaide Show.
The Primary Schools Music Festival presents the Festival of Music in South Australia annually and is recognised as a state heritage icon. This choral program has a longstanding tradition that has impacted generations of public school students across South Australia.
It is a highly valued part of the school curriculum here at CLGPS. Students and families look forward to taking part every year. It stands at the forefront of arts education in South Australia.
The Festival of Music resonates with Colonel Light Gardens' commitment to promote the importance of music and the arts in education along with engaging our school community. It plays a vital role in nurturing young talent, fostering a sense of unity and inclusivity, and preserving and building South Australia's musical landscape and history.
The positive benefits of maintaining a culture of choir and singing at Colonel Light Gardens unequivocally fosters the magic of social connection, belonging and teamwork, strengthens body posture, develops lung function, and helps blood pressure (wellbeing), improves literacy skills (excellence and equity, effective learners), along with many more benefits that enable students to thrive and prosper!
The Festival of Music provides our school with a program that connects each of us with our shared humanity.
