Learning Standards

The South Australian Curriculum Learning Standards describe what learners are expected to demonstrate at each year level or band. They focus on three key elements:

Dispositions:

These are enduring attitudes, beliefs, values, or patterns of thinking that influence behaviour and decisions throughout life. Dispositions are the 'be' element, shaping who learners are becoming. Positive dispositions affect wellbeing and success in learning.

Capabilities:

These represent the ability to take action and are the 'do' element. Each learning area emphasises fundamental ways of thinking and working. Capabilities are developed and demonstrated within learning areas and can be transferred to meet complex demands in life.

Knowledge:

This is the 'understand' element, focusing on deepening understanding through conceptual organisers. Knowledge is about making connections and meaning, enabling learners to apply their understanding to new situations and complex problems.

Cross-Curriculum Priorities

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures
  • Asia and Australia’s Engagement with Asia
  • Sustainability

These priorities are integrated into all learning areas.

Numeracy at Colonel Light Gardens Primary School

At Colonel Light Gardens Primary School, our Numeracy program is committed to fostering a deep understanding of mathematical concepts. We focus on:

  • Conceptual Understanding: Students learn to recognise patterns, explore relationships, and develop problem-solving skills. This helps them build enduring knowledge and apply their understanding to find solutions in various contexts.
  • Positive Disposition: We encourage a growth mindset towards mathematics, where students see its value, approach challenges with confidence, and believe in their ability to improve.
  • Diverse Learning Experiences: Our program includes a variety of lessons, such as explicit teaching, problem-solving tasks, and hands-on activities using concrete materials. This ensures a balanced approach to learning, catering to different needs and abilities.
  • Collaborative Planning: Professional Learning Teams work together to design and sequence units of work, ensuring consistency and alignment across year levels. This collaborative approach supports transparency and coherence in teaching.
  • Data-Informed Teaching: We use assessments like PAT Maths, NAPLAN, and formative assessments to guide our teaching and provide targeted support for all students.

Our goal is to inspire students to see mathematics not just as a subject, but as a valuable tool for reasoning, problem-solving, and understanding the world. We aim to equip them with the skills and confidence needed for lifelong learning and success.

At Colonel Light Gardens Primary School, our Science and Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) programs are designed to spark curiosity and foster a deep understanding of the world.

Science

In Science, students explore the natural and physical world through hands-on experiments and inquiry-based learning. Aligned with the South Australian Curriculum, our program encourages students to ask questions, make observations, and develop critical thinking skills. By engaging with scientific concepts, students learn to apply their knowledge to real-world situations, nurturing a lifelong interest in discovery and innovation.

Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS)

Our HASS curriculum covers History, Geography, Civics and Citizenship, and Economics and Business. Students investigate the past and present, understanding how societies function and interact. Through projects and discussions, they develop skills in research, analysis, and communication. The South Australian Curriculum guides our approach, ensuring students gain a comprehensive understanding of their community and the broader world.

Both programs aim to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in a rapidly changing world, fostering informed and active citizens.
